Whether it be due to the drab, cold weather or familial drama, the holiday season isn’t always full of joy and magic for all. Self-care is vital when you’re distressed. Below are nine self-care ideas for those who struggle this time of year for whatever reason (or who are simply in need of some good old fashioned self-care!).

Get a massage or facial. This is a great time of year to take advantage of holiday promotional rates and offers that your local spa or message salons may be offering. Call around and inquire about possible holiday promotions, or schedule an appointment at your favorite spa or salon. 

Take a soak in your bathtub or jacuzzi. It’ll feel even better after a day spent outside in the cold.

Call a friend to wish them a happy holiday. This a great time of year to connect with your support system.

Create a Self-Care themed Secret Santa or Holiday Gift exchange. Everyone needs Self-Care. This would be a fantastic way to ensure that you and your friends and family and taking good care of themselves this holiday season. Potential gift ideas: bath bombs or soaks, nail salon or spa gift certificates, facial masks, etc.

Sit down with a hot beverage and make a list of all that you’re grateful for. Studies show that expressing gratitude can improve your mental health. 

Sign up for therapy or look into joining a support group. If you’re struggling with your mood or experiencing distress in your relationships, find someone you can talk to. You don’t have to go through whatever you are experiencing alone. 

Set boundaries with anyone in your life that is stealing your joy. Many people struggle with guilt or remorse when they assert boundaries, but healthy boundaries are an essential part of mental health and self-care. This doesn’t mean that you have to excommunicate yourself from anyone who’s ever crossed a line; it can be as simple as telling an overbearing friend that you need some space. (note: if it’s unclear what healthy boundaries are, it may be helpful to discuss this with a mental health professional).

When shopping for holiday gifts, don’t forget to treat yourself! You deserve it. 

If you’re an introvert, don’t forget to take time for yourself. This time of year is often full of parties, events, and family get-togethers which can sometimes be stressful or overwhelming for introverts. If you’re an introvert and you have a long list of events lined up, don’t forget to schedule some quality alone time, too.
